2020 The Nun and the Arts
This artwork, created in 2020 just before the ‘Black Abstract’ series, reflects my abundance of thoughts and ideas during the creative process. It is a spatial collage of approximately 230 x 110 cm (the starting point for this size was the space above the chimney in Arti et Amicitea in Am- sterdam, where a Breitner usually hangs), composed of different materials such as foam board, paper, book illustrations, black paint, glue and wood. In this collage, countless thoughts and concepts intermingle, with one idea flowing seamlessly into the next. Looking back, I realize that I made this work out of a feeling of discomfort, that I could no longer continue: how to further evolve myself. Should I evolve, I asked myself. I was afraid that I couldn’t go any further, that I couldn’t come up with anything anymore. I made it to get further, but I didn’t know what yet.
My thoughts are influenced by the books I read and the images I encounter. ‘The Nun and the Arts’ serves as a visual representation of my mental landscape, capturing my overwhelming de- sire to comprehend everything.
By integrating spatial elements and combining different materials, I create a tangible and mul- ti-dimensional experience. The black paint and book illustrations, although separated from their original context, carry contribute to the overall atmosphere and act as a catalyst for contemplati- on and interpretation. ‘The Nun and the Arts’ captures the feelings of powerlessness that arose in me because I no longer knew how to proceed. This work became my own journey of discovery, in which I immersed myself in the complexity of the human mind and its limitless possibilities.
