2018 Epic City
This artwork explores the concept of an expansive and timeless urban environment. The triptych composition consists of three panels, each measuring 100 x 70 x 10 cm, forming a connected map. At first glance, the viewer encounters a map spanning the three panels. Upon closer in- spection, however, the structure is revealed to be filled with a collage of photos depicting various elements of urban existence. Ancient excavations, charred and devastated cities, reconstructed urban landscapes, monuments, and the grand pillars of a cathedral all coexist in this intricate composition.
The artwork challenges conventional perspectives and linear depictions of space by incorpora- ting multiple viewpoints and perspective lines. By juxtaposing different periods in history, a sense of timelessness and epic grandeur is created. The combination of these disparate elements con- tributes to the immersive and monumental nature of the artwork.
A particularly striking fragment in the composition shows kneeling soldiers in a bombed church, illuminated by light streaming in from the upper right. This classic image of faith and resilience prompts reflection on the interconnectedness of the city’s fate and the resilience of its inhabitants. Through the combination of collage techniques, including polystyrene, digital prints, glue, card- board, tape, and wood, this work is a visually layered and conceptually rich artwork. ‘Epic City’ invites viewers to contemplate the complex relationship between cities and humanity, encompas- sing themes of history, destruction, reconstruction, and the enduring spirit of urban life.
