Special
edition, collectors item max edition 75
For
the second part of their On The Road Too project, and
the new book: 'On the Road Too, Part II, Dutch
artist Peter Spaans (Amsterdam, 1953) and his American
friend, Dan Schmidt, (New York, 1957) drove 6,100
miles (9800 km kilometers) from Houston, Texas to the
US/Mexican border at Brownsville, Texas, and from
there to the US/Canadian border at Dunseith, North
Dakota, and then back to Houston in 20 days. As they
did while making On The Road, Too, Part I, they
traveled as much as possible on older US National
highways and on State roads, rather than on the
Eisenhower Interstate Highway System. They knew that
on such a journey they would see the country; the
cities and towns, as well as the wide open spaces of
the west, rather than pass through it on the
Interstate Highways. Peter Spaans made 10,000
photographs during this trip. Most of the photographs
were taken between 10 AM and 5 PM, as daylight is
brightest then. Mr. Spaans eventually chose 1000
photographs, one image for each page of the book. On
The Road Too Part II is an extended, raw, uncensored,
and uncommon visual portrait of America seen over 20
consecutive days from the vantage point of their car.

World Works.
3 books, around 300 pages, hard-cover, bound.
Handprinted. Page sizes 50 x 70 cm. Edition 1.
World Works is a visual quest for knowledge and
beauty, which raises questions about the shifting of
time and my changing consciousness. A denouement of my
first 60 years of life (1953 - 2013), made visible
in an extremely complicated whole, which reveals
my aesthetic preferences and thus raises questions
about what touches me, fascinates, stimulates me, what
I share and would like to share with others. I am
curious about a time frame in which I myself am. It's
a framework. One of the possibilities to place all my
information in a frame, as I previously placed photo
series in a grid, reminiscent of a map of a city. I
started to collect information chronologically on
cardboard sheets of 22 x 38 cm and later scanned this
and processed it further in a digital archive. Result:
Approximately 1200 digital sheets measuring 22 x 38
cm. I copied 4 of these sheets on a larger sheet of
approximately 61 x 95 cm, so that I now have
approximately 300 sheets of 61 x 95 cm. These sheets
are large collages with some limitations such as size
(always the same size), layout of the sheet
(white border, gray background) and the consistent
addition of stickers with the year on them. Out of
these maps I made three books.

2013 Een Stad / Amsterdam
vanaf het spoor, part one, 1988-1989, 14,5 x
21 cm, 126 pages, full color.
Amsterdam photographed from the railway, for the first
time brought together in a book.
Between November 17, 1988 and March 19, 1989, I
photographed Amsterdam from the railroad tracks.
Photographed casually, as you look around.
It is a good way of moving through the city. Without
the pressure that you experience when you walk through
the streets.
By looking at the city from the railroad you have the
opportunity to see the city from a distance.
You get an overview / predominance in the thoughts
that shoot through you as you try to fathom the city.
You get the time to think.
The sounds of the city occasionally blow over the
rails. Just as if they (the sounds) want to involve me
in the life of the city.

1945, from my father is brought together with the
visual diary of my journey through America in 2007.
The photos are details of pictures that I took during
my trip to America in 2007. The pages of the diary I
photographed as well as I normally shoot: "casual,
fast, almost casually, but very focused. The pages are
sometimes just out of focus, and exposure is always
different. My father and I both make a journey: he was
forced, I want out free, but it's also about: father -
son, old - young, occasionally, long journey - short
trip and so on.

One of the stories of the One the Road Too project
is the transformation of the landscape by successive
generations of Americans. As the photographs depict,
each generation leaves both their masterpieces and
their ruins behind. Creative destruction is heralded
as the vital energy of American capitalism; the old
and inefficient being constantly replaced by
something new. The resulting destruction is a price
that is paid for progress. All across the United
States they observed a phenomenon that has been
transforming the American landscape for generations.

Tall square quarto. 30 x 30
cm, 84 pages. Limited to 150 copies (of which there
are 50 copies in cloth). SIGNED by the photographer
in pencil and dated in the year of publication.
Photographically illustrated artist's book with 50
black-and-white images shot from eight of New York's
rail yards. (There are also 6 drawings, and two
photographic abstractions.)
Exceptional photographs
of mid-eighties New York subway and rail yards,
overpasses, train tracks, and the surrounding
architecture of these rather forlorn neighborhoods.
Ahead of its time conceptually.
Over
the course of several visits in 1984-1985, Peter
Spaans was granted access by the MTA to photograph
inside eight of New York City's subway storage and
transfer yards. Whether in the Bronx, Jamaica, or
Coney Island, the resulting images of empty trains,
housing projects, and vast swaths of urban decay
represent snapshots usually glimpsed from grimy
elevated subway windows in the outer boroughs, or from
cars while being whisked to an airport, a beach, or a
ball game. They are not places one ordinarily stops to
admire the scenery.Similar to the Becher's
Dsseldorf School, Spaans' photographs have a
feeling on the surface of detachment and cold
documentation. There are few people and few signs of
life. New York from the Yards could easily be seen as
a topographical study of an anonymous city, employing
a similar philosophy as the German photographers. Yet
Spaans' images are quintessentially New York. His
focus on the marginalia of a city still firmly rooted
in the pre-Giuliani era exudes a strange romance,
almost a spell, that only this city can provide.
